The Pathways Coalition

Formed by E.ON, H&M Group, Scania, Siemens and Postnord the coalition aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of heavy transport.

Transport is the second largest source of global CO2 emissions and currently contributes nearly a quarter of global emissions. To reach the Paris climate target, it is essential to fully decarbonise heavy commercial transport. The transition requires an unprecedented pace of new technology adoption in mobility industries and adjacent sectors. It will require dramatic changes across all sectors in the form of new technologies, new infrastructure, and completely new business models. To achieve full sales penetration of fossil free powertrain technologies by 2040, we need an adoption rate growth of at least 5-10 % per year across regions.

The Pathways Study concludes that a transition to decarbonised heavy transport is not only possible but also financially attractive from a societal perspective. However, to tackle the challenge and speed up the pace of change, cooperation across sectors is necessary. The four companies that have formed The Pathways Coalition thus represent different parts of the value chain; infrastructure provision, energy solutions and supply, vehicle manufacturing as well as retail with the transport buyer perspective.

The coalition has initiated a plan to support the overall objective to reach zero emissions in line with the Paris agreement by accelerating the pace of change. The plan includes to:

  • Build knowledge on the pathways towards fossil free heavy-duty transports to gain deeper insight into drivers and obstacles to change. Knowledge is built with a focus on local markets as well as on a global level.
  • Embrace new technologies and innovation.
  • Initiate high impact projects in key markets to increase knowledge and gain deeper insight into drivers and obstacles to change. The main goal of all projects is to drive transformation.
  • Cooperate to identify high impact innovations and partnerships within the operations of the coalition members, as well as their respective ecosystems.
  • Share learnings, insights and knowledge with other stakeholders to inspire others to follow and empower them to act.
  • Communicate as an industry voice, act as ambassadors of enlightenment in public and motivate policy makers to drive rapid change in the transport sector.
  • Invite new members to join that can contribute to the main targets of the Coalition.

The members of The Pathways Coalition have formed a steering group that meets regularly to define roadmaps and assess progress. As a support for executing strategies and activities, an external project management office has been set up. The member companies commit to the vision of the Coalition, to the objective to reach zero CO2e latest by year 2050, to contribute with real action in the partnership and to contribute funds in accordance with joint decisions. New members are admitted through consensus decisions in the steering group.

The Coalition

The Pathways Coalition was formed by E.ON, H&M Group, Scania and Siemens to accelerate decarbonisation of heavy transport. Ericsson joined in 2020 and Postnord in 2021. The member companies commit to the vision of the Coalition, to the objective to reach zero CO2 latest by year 2050, to contribute with real action in the partnership and to contribute funds in accordance with joint decisions.

E.ON Nordic

E.ON Nordic’s business covers a wide range of activities within energy distribution and energy solutions, including mobility solutions based on both electrification and biogas. E.ON’s Swedish division is leading a shift to only producing and offering 100% renewable and recycled energy by 2025. The shift is part of the company’s sustainability ambitions aiming to reduce climate emissions by 50% by 2025.

H&M Group

H&M Group includes eight clearly defined fashion brands, among them H&M and COS. The brands are represented in stores in 72 markets as well as with a strong digital presence. The sustainability vision of the H&M Group is to lead the change towards a sustainable fashion industry based on a fully circular approach and renewable energy. H&M Group has established a Renewable fuel strategy focusing on the use of electrical vehicles and second generation biofuels.

Scania

Scania is a world-leading provider of transport solutions, including trucks and buses for heavy transport applications combined with an extensive product-related service offering. Scania’s aim is to drive the shift towards a sustainable transport system, creating a world of mobility that is better for business, society and the environment. Siemens eMobility

Siemens is a global powerhouse focusing on the areas of electrification, automation and digitalization. Being one of the world’s largest producers of energy-efficient, resource-saving technologies, Siemens play a pioneering role in sustainable  and intelligent infrastructure and industry solutions.  Siemens has been the first global industrial company to commit towards carbon neutrality by 2030.

Ericsson

The company has a target to be carbon neutral in 2030 for own operations and a Science Based Target, to reduce the carbon footprint of Ericsson´s own activities by 35% in 2022.

Postnord
